City of Apache Junction

The City of Apache Junction, incorporated in 1978, sits below the Majestic Superstition Mountain and lies in both Maricopa and Pinal County.

Apache Junction is also the gateway to the Superstition Wilderness and the Tonto National Forest. This Superstition Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 250 square miles and was designated in 1939. The Tonto National Forest is the largest national forest in Arizona and the fifth largest in the United States. The forest is over 4,489 square miles and was first designated in 1905 and gets over 6,000,000 visitors per year.

The City of Apache Junction has a population of 41,200 permanent residents which can increase to near 75,000 in the winter months. Full time and guest residents flock to Apache Junction due to the lower cost of living while still being close to the Phoenix Metropolitan area and low crime rate. In 2019, the city was rated as the 12th safest city in all of Arizona.

Recreation

Recreational Opportunities abound due to the location of the city with hiking, biking, sightseeing, boating and many other outdoor activities available within minutes of the city. In town the city also boasts a Multi Generational Fitness center and large community swimming pool complex. Also, local interest groups and the City of Apache Junction’s robust Parks and Recreation Department host a number of special events all year long including: the Lost Dutchman Days, Festival of the Superstitions, Lost Dutchman Marathon, 4th of July Fireworks display, Library Comic Con, AJ Mud Run, Halloween, Holiday Light Parade; and smaller events like movies and concerts in the park plus many more.
